Solo business software

Affordable Job Management Software for Solo Tradespeople

You don't need a system built for a large office. You need the right few things, working well. Here's how to tell which, and what four real options cost.

A solo tradesperson reviewing jobs and paperwork at a modest home workspace

Picture an ordinary Thursday. A customer texts a photo of a leaking tap and asks what it will cost. You're under a sink on another job, so you reply from your phone with a rough figure. Later you can't remember what you said. The work gets done, the invoice waits until Sunday night, and the money arrives a fortnight after that.

Nothing about that means you're bad at business. It means the paperwork lives in your head and your phone, and both are busy. A spreadsheet or calendar works until customer details, site notes, quotes and payment status end up in five different places. But the opposite mistake is just as common: buying a large field-service platform that brings more setup, training and cost than one person needs.

This guide follows a single job from first message to paid invoice and asks what a one-person business needs at each step. Then we look at four real options with public prices, see how each behaves as you grow from one person to five, and finish with a seven-day trial that tells you which one to keep.

The job, step by step

The simplest test of any tool is whether it can take one customer from enquiry to paid invoice on the device you actually carry. Here is what that involves, and what you can ignore.

The enquiry. You need somewhere to save the customer's name, address and what they asked for, in seconds, from your phone. You can ignore sales pipelines and marketing automation.

The quote. This is where solo operators lose the most time and, quietly, the most work. You need to build and send a quote from your phone and turn it into a job when it's accepted.

The booking. You need a schedule you can read at a glance, and the ability to move a job once without a fuss.

The visit. You need to add notes and a photo to the right job, and change the price if the work changes.

The invoice and payment. This is the step that pays for the software. You need to invoice from the job, record payments, and correct an error without starting again.

If a product does those five things smoothly, it is a good fit even if it looks plain next to competitors. Fast setup and a clear daily routine matter more than a long feature list.

Four options, and what each one asks of you

We compared four alternatives with public prices: Jobber, ServiceM8 UK, Tradify UK and GorillaDesk. They use different billing units, so the figures below are not a cheapest-to-dearest ranking.

Currency note. Converted prices are approximate USD estimates based on the European Central Bank reference rates for 25 September 2026, when 1 GBP ≈ $1.33. Original GBP prices are shown in brackets. Exchange rates and card-provider rates change, so check the vendor's current billing currency, tax or VAT treatment and checkout total before buying.

Jobber: a low entry price for a broad workflow

Jobber's official pricing content shows Core at $29 a month for one user. On annual billing, Connect starts at $99 for one user and costs $149 a month for two to five users. Its pages describe a customer-to-payment workflow that includes scheduling, quotes, invoices and payments.

For a solo owner, Core is worth investigating when you want a broad home-service workflow and the features you need are included. For a small team, Connect becomes the relevant comparison at three or five users. Check before paying: the prices shown here are based on Jobber's official plan information checked on 27 September 2026. Confirm the current selector, billing commitment, included features and checkout total directly before buying.

ServiceM8 UK: a free solo plan, then flat pricing

ServiceM8's UK page lists a Free plan for one user and 30 new jobs a month. Starter costs about $33 (£25) a month, includes unlimited users and allows 50 new jobs a month.

For a solo owner, Free is a credible place to start if 30 jobs a month covers your workload. For a small team, Starter's price doesn't change at three or five users, but the 50-job allowance may become the limit. Check before paying: ServiceM8 says its full app is optimised for iOS, while ServiceM8 Lite gives a reduced Android field workflow, so test the phones you actually use.

Tradify UK: straightforward per-user trade pricing

Tradify's UK page lists Lite at about $45 (£34) per user per month, describing notes and documents, scheduling, quotes and invoices in that plan.

For a solo owner, Lite gives you a clear price and a workflow built for trades. For a small team, the estimated USD total rises directly with each person, to about $135 (£102) for three users and about $225 (£170) for five, before add-ons. Check before paying: confirm Lite contains every workflow you need. Moving to Pro or Plus changes the per-user price, so a missing feature can change the whole comparison.

GorillaDesk: specialist route software

GorillaDesk's monthly selector lists Basic at $49 for one route, $149 for three and $209 for five. A separately travelling technician normally needs their own route, while people travelling together can share one under a crew leader. Admin users and mobile devices are listed as unlimited.

For a solo owner, a one-route pest, lawn or recurring-service business may find the specialist workflow worth the higher entry price. For a small team, count route leaders, not total logins, before reading the three- and five-route figures as team costs. Check before paying: compare Basic with Pro if you need online booking, advanced routing or another feature that sits on a higher plan.

Read the units before comparing. Jobber's prices are on an annual prepaid basis. GorillaDesk charges by independently travelling route, not by every admin login. ServiceM8's paid UK plans allow unlimited users but limit new jobs each month. Tradify UK charges per user. Taxes, payment fees and add-ons are excluded. Our cost guide shows how to add them up.

Which one suits which business?

  • One owner with a light workload: look at ServiceM8 Free first, if its 30-job limit and device fit work for you.
  • One general home-service operator: compare Jobber Core, Tradify Lite and ServiceM8 Starter using one complete job.
  • One recurring-route specialist: include GorillaDesk even though its entry price is higher, because route and treatment workflows can matter more than the base fee.
  • Three to five people: compare Jobber Connect, ServiceM8 Starter and Tradify at the full seat count. Add GorillaDesk using the number of independently travelling routes.
  • Six to ten people: ask for the exact current total, and test permissions, schedule changes and reporting before assuming an entry plan still fits.

A seven-day trial

Once you've picked two, let your own work decide.

A leaking-tap job moving through enquiry, quote, booking changes, repair, invoice and payment during a seven-day trial
A short trial is useful when every day tests a real part of one representative job.
  1. Day 1: enter five real customers and your list of services.
  2. Day 2: build and send a representative quote.
  3. Day 3: schedule the accepted work and change the appointment once.
  4. Day 4: complete the job from your phone, including notes and a photo.
  5. Day 5: invoice, record a part payment and correct a deliberate error.
  6. Day 6: export your customer and job data and look at what you can recover.
  7. Day 7: write down the full first-year cost and every step that still needed a workaround.

The decision rule

For a solo owner, simple software is the product that completes the real customer-to-payment loop with the least avoidable administration, at a price you can sustain. For a small team, it must keep that simplicity when several people touch the same job. Choose from the tested workflow and the total cost, not from the longest feature list. If you'd like more structure for the trial, our guide to choosing simple field-service software has a 14-day version.
