Check the economics of one job

Enter a customer price before sales tax and your own job costs. Results recalculate in your browser as you type.

Use one currency consistently across every amount.
Use your own fully loaded cost method.
Enter 2.5 for a 2.5% fee.
This is your chosen scenario, not an industry recommendation.

Enter your job figures to see estimated profit and a target quote.

Exclude sales tax collected for a tax authority. This is a planning aid, not tax, accounting, legal or market-pricing advice.

Your entered figures stay in this browser: the calculator does not submit them or save them, and reloading clears them. Routine site browsing may be handled as described in our Privacy Notice.

A job can bring in revenue and still leave too little after labor, materials, travel and overhead. This free job profit calculator for contractors makes those costs visible before you send a quote or when you review a completed job.

Enter the customer price before sales tax, total paid crew-hours, and your cost per labor-hour including any burden you choose to account for. Add materials, subcontractors, vehicle or travel costs, allocated overhead, other job costs and payment fees. The results update in the browser as you change the figures.

Profit, margin and target price

Estimated job profit is the entered price minus the entered costs, including the modeled payment fee. Profit margin is that profit divided by the price. Margin is not markup: markup compares profit with cost, while margin compares profit with sales.

The target quote price solves for the entered target margin after the percentage-based payment fee. It is a planning calculation, not a market quote or guarantee. Check scope, local competition, taxes and any legal pricing requirements before sending a customer an estimate.

Make the inputs match the job

  • Use total paid crew-hours, including paid travel time, and a labor cost per hour that reflects your own payroll or owner-cost method.
  • Enter materials at your cost, not the amount billed to the customer.
  • Include either actual job-specific vehicle cost or a defensible allocation, not both for the same expense.
  • Enter an overhead allocation only if you have a method for assigning it to jobs.
  • Enter the processor’s percentage and fixed charge from the terms that apply to your transaction.

This tool does not set a “correct” margin or provide tax or accounting advice. For software costs that affect overhead, use the field-service software cost calculator. For a workflow to test job and office handoffs, read our small-business field-service software guide.

Frequently asked questions

Does this calculate markup or profit margin?

It shows profit margin as profit divided by the customer price. It does not label markup as margin.

Should I include sales tax in the quoted price?

No. Enter the job price before sales tax and exclude tax collected on behalf of a tax authority from revenue and costs.

Does it recommend what contractors should charge?

No. It calculates from your costs and chosen target margin. It does not know your local market, scope, tax treatment or customer terms.
